My art has long been a personal and private form of expression. As a hobby artist, I have explored painting, pencil, chalk, and photography, creating primarily for myself and to display in my home. My 30-year career in the U.S. Navy kept me moving, and after returning to Spartanburg in 2008, my involvement in the veteran community often left little time for artistic pursuits.
I now find myself at a meaningful turning point. I intend to return to art with greater purpose, explore different mediums and subjects, and discover where my creative voice will lead me. Through my participation in the Art Collective, I hope to find inspiration, fellowship, and opportunities to learn from other artists. Rather than limiting myself to a predetermined style, I want to remain open to experimentation and allow each new work to reveal what comes next in my artistic journey.
Bio
John J. Barron is a self-directed, multidisciplinary artist whose work has evolved through years of independent exploration across a variety of mediums. A retired U.S. Navy veteran with 30 years of service, he brings discipline, patience, and careful attention to detail to his creative practice. He currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the Mechatronics Program at Spartanburg Community College and the Lifelong Learning program at Wofford College working at the intersection of technology and applied learning.
Barron has developed his artistic voice through hands-on practice, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment. His work includes painting, drawing, photography, and digital image manipulation, reflecting his interest in how different mediums can interpret and transform the same subject.
Barron is also a 2010 thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail, an experience that continues to influence his artistic perspective. The discipline, solitude, endurance, and close observation required on the trail are reflected in his approach to composition and subject matter.
Photography often provides the foundation for Barron’s creative process. He uses digital tools to alter, enhance, and reimagine his original images. By combining traditional artistic methods with contemporary digital techniques, he explores composition, detail, and transformation. Each medium informs the next as Barron continues to develop a visual language shaped by experience, curiosity, and innovation.
