Although I began in acrylics, I now work with oil paint. While I continue to appreciate both mediums, oil painting is where my heart is currently rooted.
My work is primarily abstract, often featuring striking, expressive figures with intentionally minimal facial details. I make this choice to create space for the viewer to see themselves—or someone familiar—in my work. Rather than defining every feature, I want my paintings to leave room for personal interpretation and connection. I want the work to speak differently to each person who encounters it.
I came to painting to process and navigate grief. What began as an outlet for emotions I struggled to express in words became an important part of my healing journey. Through creating, I discovered not only a means of releasing grief, but also a new sense of confidence in my voice and my ability to create.
As an artist, my goal extends beyond my own healing. I hope to create work that gives others permission to feel, reflect, connect, and perhaps find a sense of healing within themselves. Ultimately, I want my art to serve as a reminder that there is beauty and possibility in the process of becoming whole again.
Bio
Brittany Ammonds is a South Carolina artist originally from Orangeburg who has called the Upstate home for the past seven years. Her relationship with art began in childhood when, as a fourth-grade student, her art teacher recognized her natural ability and encouraged her to audition for the South Carolina State University Consortium for Arts program. As a participant in the gifted and talented program for several years, Brittany was introduced to a variety of artistic mediums and began developing a creative foundation that would remain with her throughout her life.
Although she has no formal art training beyond her early years, Brittany has remained connected to the arts for more than two decades. In recent years, she returned to art with greater intention and consistency, using the creative process to navigate grief, quiet her mind, and begin healing.
Today, Brittany primarily works in oil paint, creating abstract works centered around striking, expressive figures. Her work often incorporates minimal facial details, allowing viewers the freedom to see themselves, someone they know, or their own experiences reflected within the work.
Brittany is new to the professional art world and is embracing this next chapter with excitement and purpose. Her goal is to share work that not only reflects her own journey, but also inspires others to connect with their emotions, embrace their stories, and discover healing through creativity.
Her greatest inspiration is her daughter, who reminds her to keep moving forward, remain focused, and continue pursuing the life she envisions as an artist.
