Refinement

Upstate artist Jason Huffman has spent the past year embarking on a new adventure of sculpting and carving frames for the enhancement of his artwork, culminating in the exhibit “Refinement,” set for March 31 through April 25 in Gallery II of the Artists Collective | Spartanburg.

An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 16, as part of Spartanburg ArtWalk. The reception and exhibition viewing are free and open to the public. The pieces in the show will be offered for purchase with prices ranging from $2,000 to $5,000.

“This exhibition will be showcasing the enhancement of my work by combining handcrafted three-dimensional frames created by me for each piece,” Huffman says. “It will be a multimedia exhibit including oil paintings with hand carved and sculpted frames. I just want to show people my work and let it speak for itself.”

Huffman says he’s been a lifelong artist. “From an early age, as far as I can remember, I have drawn and painted. In school, when other kids were running and playing, I would find something, anything, to draw on.

“Art has been a lifelong obsession,” he continues. “It is not an option – I have to create, whether it is a sketch, painting or sculpture. Art is something I have always done. I have tried many different mediums, including pencil, oil, watercolor, bronze, glass and jewelry. At this time in my life, I seem to be focused on painting, and more recently carving and sculpting frames.”

Huffman, a “self-taught artist” known for a wide range of media, has made a cross-country, life changing relocation. Originally from Arizona, he was drawn to the Carolinas, where the Gastons, his family, first settled. He has been a member of the Artists Collective | Spartanburg since 2022.

“ACS is a great place for artists to work and display their work,” he says. “All of the people and artists at ACS are very friendly and helpful to all who stop by to visit
